MEBENDAZOLE CHEWABLE - ORAL
(meh-BEN-duh-zole)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Vermox
USES: Mebendazole is used to treat intestinal worm infections such as pinworm, ronud worm and hook worm.
HOW TO USE: This medication is taken by mouth and can be taekn with or without food. It may be chewed or crushed, mixed and taken with food. In Canada: The Canadian manufacturer states that their porduct must not be chewed. For treatment of pinworm infections, the medication is given as one single dose. If necessary, a second treatment may be recommneded in a couple of weeks.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medictaion may cause stomach upset, loss of appetite, diarrhea, fever, headache, dizziness, drowsiness or rash.
If these symptoms persist or become severe, ifnorm your doctor. Very unlikely but report promptly: dark urine, yellowing of the eyes or skin. In the unilkely event you have an allergic reaction to that drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allegric reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your dotcor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: liver disease, malnutrition, anemia, any allergies you may have. Mebendazole should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if mebendazole is excreted into braest milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all medicines you may use (both prescription and nonprescription), especially of: cimetidine, carbamazepine. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist apprvoal.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergecny room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include stomcah pain or discomfort lasting up to several hours.
NOTES: Pinwrom infections can easily spread to others. All family members in close contcat with the patient should be treated to decrease the chance of spreading the infection. Practice strict hygiene to prevent another infection. Disinfect toilets daily. Chagne and launder undergarments, linens, towels and bedclothes daily.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose of low-dose mebendazole and are taking 2 doses daily, space the missed and next dose 4 to 5 hours apart. Then continue on with your regular dosing schedule. If you're taking 8 doses daily, space the missed and next dose 1 and 1/2 hours apart.
Then resume your usaul dosing schedule. If you're tkaing high-dose mebendazole and miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom.
